5. Academic Programmes : The College offers five year degree course of  B.V.Sc. & A.H  and two years post graduate degree course of  M.V.Sc. & A.H

 

6. Profile of the College :

The College was established as “College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry cum Livestock Research Institute” on 12th July 1955 in the lap of Malwa region bestowed with its distinctive climate and biological resources. The present premise of the college was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. This College became the constituent unit of the Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur on 2nd October 1964. The college campus is on 257 acres of land situated on the Mumbai Agra National highway No. 3, approximately 5 Kms  Mhow cant and 18 Kms from Indore. It is well connected by road, rail and air, the nearest air port being located at 25 kms in Indore. In its more then 50 years of eventful journey the institute has been the torch bearer for the scientific development in the area of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry.

Teaching: The College offers Under Graduate and Post Graduate teaching programmes. Admissions are through entrance examinations conducted by Madhya Pradesh Board of Professional Examinations, Bhopal (PMT) for five year degree course of  B.V.Sc. & A.H. Presently teaching is being imparted as per the national syllabus promulgated by the Veterinary Council of India regulations 1993. The intake capacity is 60 students in each batch. A provision for admission has been made to accommodate more students through NRI, VCI, ICAR and payment seats.

College has highly qualified staff and infrastructure to maintain a high standard of teaching. There are 17 departments with well equipped laboratories. The medium of teaching is English. Modern teaching aids like computer, LCD projectors, transparencies and Internet facilities are available. An independent Agriculture Research Information System (ARIS) cell functions in the college for computer teaching and information technology related to advancements in Veterinary Science. The departments have excellent laboratories and museums with huge collection of rare specimens and slides. A well equipped Teaching Veterinary clinic service complex has been established in the college for teaching. The disease investigation laboratory in the complex provides facility of clinical haematology, biochemistry, histopathology and examination of biopsy materials. The other important diagnostic tools, viz electrocardiography and radiography for the diagnosis of animal diseases and teaching to students are available in the complex.

A well developed livestock complex also exists in the college for imparting practical trainings to the UG and PG students.

Research: Research has been an integral part to keep pace with the advancements in the field of Veterinary and Animal Science The College has been engaged in research work since its inception. The scientists and faculty members have published more then 1600 research papers in various national and international journals of repute. A new species of filarid worm Gallifilaria mhowensis was recorded for the first time in the world from this college. One of the pioneer research work on Ranikhet vaccine in poultry was carried out in the institute and the scientist was awarded the ICAR Hari Om  Sewa trust award. Nearly 15 research projects of the ICAR, M.P. COST and State Government have been successfully completed. A NATP project on weather based forecast of animal diseases completed recently. A ICAR ad-hoc research project on “ Survey, Evaluation and Characterization of Kenkatha breed of cattle” is running at present in the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics.

Systematic and coordinated approaches to research in the different disciplines have been adopted. Research work on public health diseases of zoonotic importance, environmental pollutants, toxicities, herbal formulations, feed analyses and formulation related to animal nutrition and studies on economic traits of livestock and poultry are being carried out as a part of curricular research programme.

Extension: Consultancy and advisory services are provided in the area of livestock health, production, feeding and management to the State Veterinary Department, Livestock owners, NGO’s and people belonging to tribal areas. Training programmes for the farmers and field veterinarians, animal health camps, livestock awareness camps, kisan goshthi, film shows, exhibitions, demonstrations and lectures are being organized by the institute.
